A STORY ABOUT 3X WORLD CHAMPION

Dave Thorpe

Dave Thorpe's motocross career started at an early age in the schoolboy motocross scene, taking many British championship titles under the guidance of his father Keith. After a successful early amateur racing career in the AMCA riding for Honda UK, Dave Thorpe made his professional debut with the UK Kawasaki team.

Dave Thorpe switched to the formidable HRC Honda factory racing team in 1983. He emerged as a regular Grand Prix winner in 1984, and took his first world 500cc Motocross title in 1985, this was quickly followed by his second, retaining the world title in 1986.

Dave Thorpe won his third world 500cc Motocross title in 1989, following a thrilling season-long battle with HRC team mate Eric Geboers.

To this day Dave Thorpe remains the last British rider to have won the premier division of the motocross world championships.

"I was an individual
sportsman"

I was always an individual sort of sportsperson really. While I could lend myself to being a team player in football or rugby, I liked the aspect in motocross of being in charge of my own destiny, so we decided to take up Honda UK’s offer.
